What Junk Removal Companies Won't Take (And What To Do Instead)
Every junk removal company has a list of things it will not put in the truck. It is not fussiness — most of it is a legal requirement, and the rest is about crew safety.
Hazardous waste — the hard no
Nobody with a normal hauling licence can legally take these in a general load:
- Paint, stains and solvents. Latex paint can usually be dried out solid (kitty litter or a hardener) and then binned as regular waste. Oil-based paint and solvents must go to a household hazardous waste facility.
- Motor oil, antifreeze and fuel. Most auto parts stores take used oil free of charge.
- Pesticides, herbicides and pool chemicals. Household hazardous waste collection only.
- Asbestos. Licensed abatement contractor, full stop. Common in pre-1980s flooring, pipe lagging and some ceiling textures. If we suspect it on a job, we stop and tell you.
- Medical and biohazard waste. Sharps, medication, anything contaminated. Pharmacies run take-back programmes for medicines.
Every county in this region runs household hazardous waste drop-off days. That is the route for all of the above.
Things that need a specialist first
- Propane tanks and pressurised cylinders. Exchange or return them; they are an explosion risk in a compactor.
- Hard-plumbed or gas appliances. We can disconnect a plug-in washer or dryer. Anything on a gas line or hard-wired needs a licensed trade first.
- Oil tanks. Require draining and certified removal.
- Large tree work. We will haul everything once it is sectioned, but felling is a tree surgeon's job.
Things we can take that others often refuse
The list of refusals is shorter than people assume. These are routinely turned down by municipal collection but are ordinary work for a private hauler:
- Refrigerators, freezers, AC units and dehumidifiers (refrigerant recovered properly)
- Mattresses and box springs
- Hot tubs and above-ground pools
- Renovation and demolition debris
- Tyres, usually for a per-item fee
- Pianos, safes and gym equipment
- Sheds, decks, playsets and fencing
