If you live in a single-family home in the DMV, you probably have access to a free bulk-trash collection you are not using. It is worth understanding before you pay anyone — including us.

Use the county programme when…
- You live in a single-family home that receives municipal collection
- You have a small number of eligible items
- You can physically get them to the kerb
- You are not in a hurry

The exclusion list that catches people out
Most jurisdictions in this region exclude a broadly similar set: appliances containing refrigerant, construction and renovation debris, tyres, hazardous waste (paint, solvents, oil, chemicals), and anything requiring specialist handling. Item caps and eligibility differ, and municipalities inside a county often run their own separate service with different rules again.

The hybrid approach most people miss
Split the job. Put your eligible items out for the free county collection, and pay a hauler only for the excluded ones. On a garage clear-out where the only real problem is an old fridge, that can turn a full-load job into a single-item one.

In most DMV jurisdictions, scheduled bulk collection is included in residential service for eligible single-family households. Apartments, condos and businesses are generally excluded entirely.
Why will the county not take my refrigerator?
